Steel: I prefer to use steels that I can easily forge and heat treat at home. These include but are not limited to 1095, L6, 5160, 52100, O1, W1 and damascus.  I don't make blades out of stainless very often, but occasionally use 440c for blades.

I also make my own damascus.  The common damascus mix of 1095 and L6 is one mix that I will use.  I've been getting good performance results recently from 5160 and L6.  I will do other combinations of damascus, but I will not use mild steel in a blade mix.  When I choose steels to combine in pattern welded damascus, they must be able to make a good blade by themselves.

Handles: I use a variety of handle materials from both man made and natural sources. Stabilized wood, antler, and bone are my favorite. I prefer to use materials that last through hard use.  I try to help wood out as much as possible by stabilizing it.
